Scholarship Recipient for 2023!

Announcing The Driven by Heart Scholarship recipient for 2023!

We are so pleased to announce our latest recipient of the Driven by Heart Scholarship, Yanice Barajas-Vera! She was awarded $1,000.00 for her dedicated and compassionate contribution to her community. Please read her essay below.

An essay by Yanice Barajas-Vera:

I strive to become the best version of myself. The version of myself that I am slowly becoming is an independent, young woman, from the background of parents that I have seen struggle, but have overcome obstacles in their lives. I am becoming a woman that has grown strength and thick skin throughout her life, but most of all has grown tremendously within the opportunities that I have taken.

Without a doubt, I would say volunteering for the Keizer Police Department has changed my life in a positive way that I would have never imagined would have been so influential in my life. I changed schools in 2021 after the pandemic had put us into lockdown. I wanted change within my life, education, and a sense of community. Moving to my current school, Roberts @ Chemketa, has fulfilled those voids. It has made me who I have grown to become. I came about my current volunteer job from my school. I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to take the opportunity, but I thought about having a chance of getting closer to my community. I was interested in the work of Law enforcement and the other roles that are in the Criminal Justice field. I took opportunities that were positively enforced by my parents as well. Throughout the application process, I was dealing with interviews and background checks. After the overwhelming wait and process of the application, I was told that I had been accepted to the Keizer cadet program. I was elated by the news that I had received.

Since August of 2022, I have been involved within the Keizer Police Cadet Program. The cadet program involves young teens and adults from the age of 14-20 to volunteer as a police cadet. We become involved with community events by helping and representing the department. We also gain knowledge of law enforcement by going to an academy that teaches us the education of Police officers and other roles in the field. Within the academy, I was elected to become the Keizer class leader. With this came the responsibility of making sure my class was in line with what they had to do and making sure we were a team. As class leader, I had to lead marching, make sure no one was left behind, checked that everyone had all their equipment, and was one to talk to when needed. At the graduation of the academy, the class leader was responsible for having and reading a speech about their class.

With being a cadet, you are not only gaining knowledge of law enforcement, but gaining a connection with your community. Meeting people from different backgrounds and gaining trust with our peers. This helps us as well as the community knowing the future officers and or future people that we will be helping within the community. I have learned a lot in such a short amount of time and all has benefited me. It has positively impacted my life, the person I am today and my career path and the future. This has helped me want to do a lot more in my community and have that as part of my career. Lastly, being a cadet has made me closer to my community than I have ever been before and wanting to help and making sure the community is safe is something I would love to do with whatever career path. My main goal is to show and share my compassion to others, no matter who or what it is.

Thank you to our donors! The Driven by Heart Scholarship happens because of you!

Congratulations to Second Recipient of Driven by Heart Scholarship!

The second recipient of the Driven by Heart Scholarship is Kathleen Lillis, a business major at Linn Benton Community College.

Kathleen Lillis sent us a thank you letter, expressing her surprise and gratitude in receiving our scholarship for Fall term 2021. She has overcome medical and financial struggles and is determined to get her degree in business so that she can give back and be a contributing worker in her community. I’ve included part of her thank you letter below:

“I really enjoy volunteering in the community, and this past year it’s been tough to live in fear of germs. Volunteering this year has been a challenge so I switched gears to helping at the local food bank unloading pallets outside. Seemed like the least we could do. Also, I would go shopping and bring things to our neighbors who were over 65, and going to the store was pretty scary there for awhile. Recently, we started giving out dog food to the local homeless folks with dogs. Anyhow, this is just really super cool of you and such a relief. I hope someday I can do more than just donate time like you have done.”

We are delighted and honored to help Kathleen, a person driven by heart and working towards achieving her goals in spite of challenges and obstacles. A big thank you to her for making a difference in her local community.

We also want to take this time to give many thanks to our generous donors. The following individuals and businesses have made contributions in 2021 and made all of this possible:

Because of these generous donations, we are doubling our scholarship contributions this year from $1,000 to $2,000!

Lastly, I would like to thank Linnea Everts of the Linn Benton Community College Foundation for all of her communication and hard work in setting up our fund and matching qualified students. We deeply appreciate you!

Congratulations to First Recipient of Driven by Heart Scholarship!

We are so excited to announce our first-ever recipient of the Driven by Heart Scholarship: Luisa Anderson.

Luisa is a young woman working to give back to the world and understands compassion and care for others due to her personal journey. As a teenager, she helped her mother fight cancer, doing everything in her power to improve her mother’s quality of life and supporting the family in many ways. In her own words, “My career goal is to work in a field that can help individuals, groups or populations create more meaningful and fulfilling lives by overcoming obstacles. This drive to serve others ultimately led me to discovering a program at Linn-Benton Community College to become an occupational therapy assistant, a holistic profession that guides injured or ill people back into living their daily lives to their fullest. After the completion of my associate degree, I will fulfill an obstacle of my own and live a life of helping others reach their goals.”

We are honored to help Luisa in achieving her career goals! She is truly a person driven by heart and a beautiful embodiment of compassionate contribution. We wish her all the best in her studies!

We also want to take this time to give many thanks to our generous donors. The following individuals and businesses made contributions in 2020 and made all of this possible:

  • Heather McBride of InClarity360.
  • Bob Ricker
  • Kenneth Ricker
  • Dan and Tammy McNally of McNally Farm Animal Rescue
  • Margi Willowmoon
  • Alex Mench

Lastly, I would like to thank Linnea Everts of the Linn Benton Community College Foundation for all of her communication and hard work in setting up our fund and matching qualified students. We deeply appreciate you!

It’s official, we are rewarding our first scholarship through the LBCC Foundation!

The Driven by Heart Scholarships is in memory of Estelle VanPelt, grandmother to Brigitte and Heather McBride and mother to 5 boys. She began active involvement with the Cub Scouts in the 1950s and continued to rise through the ranks of the Cub Scouts for the next 50 years. Estelle became the first lady Cub Master in 1974 and started Handicap Scouting in the Staten Island schools in 1982 as well as in Connecticut in 1987. She received scouting’s highest award, the Silver Beaver, in 1981. Giving back has been a family tradition and the family wishes to continue to support students who give their all to help others in their community.

First scholarship will be granted this Fall to LBCC student involved in a local project based in compassionate contribution!

Almost 3 years after starting our non profit, we are about to grant our first scholarship of $500 to a student at Linn Benton Community College in Albany, OR! We are able to do this through generous donations from Alex Mench of Hawaii, Dan and Tammy McNally of Eugene, OR and Heather McBride of InClarity360. Not to mention, a lot of help from family (Kathy Hicks and Gabe Stevens). A big thank you to them and to the LBCC Foundation for connecting us with the students. The Driven by Heart Scholarship will now be granted twice a year by our non profit, working directly with the LBCC Foundation, to students involved in local projects based in compassionate contribution!

Stay tuned to see which student will be selected!

Now accepting online applications/nominations for available scholarship money!

On this first day of spring, I am so happy to announce that we are now accepting online applications/nominations! Just click here for online form. It is so exciting to announce that we have funding for our first scholarship of $500 for fall of 2020 (with the possibility of a second one available), please check out our home page for application criteria.

Please send students, teachers and parents to the online form to start the application process.

I realize that many of us are feeling limited and possibly scared by circumstances right now, but we need to hold tight. Spring is here, and these fearful times too shall pass, just as winter has. Enjoy the small yet glorious offerings of spring, even if it’s just from your kitchen window or in your backyard. Better yet, take a walk somewhere.

Let’s try to stay positive and keep blooming, like this beautiful Tillandsia Butzii.

Blooming Tillandsia
Spring is here!

I have been staying busy at home with different creative projects, building a stronger online presence and thinking of outreach possibilities. We now have a Facebook page, so check us out there for extra things not posted here! Our next steps are to continue fundraising and ramp up outreach by contacting high schools in the Willamette Valley to share our site and scholarship opportunity. We will also reach out to our target community colleges so that an application link is available on their websites in the near future.

Please think about sharing this post to spread the word that we are now accepting online applications.

Well I think that is it for now. Take care of yourselves, and thank you so much for your interest and support!

Now Accepting Donations and Nominations!

Happy New Year everyone! I am so pleased to announce that we are now able to accept donations online, and we are also ready to receive nominations for eligible students.

Our goal is to grant 1-3 scholarships of $500 each this fall, with the hopes of increasing that amount to $1,000 each next year!

Please read the project criteria on the home page before nominating a student. All nominations can be sent to us at: drivenbyheartinfo@gmail.com.

Our next steps include: adding an application form to this site, outreach to Willamette Valley high schools, creating a Facebook page, and of course, the ongoing journey of fundraising.

As of May 8, 2019, we are officially a 501(c)(3) which means any donations made to this organization are tax deductible! Donations will only used for administrative costs (a very small amount), outreach material and the scholarships themselves.

You may be thinking that $500 is not a lot of money to really make a difference in a young person’s life. However, it can and does. When my son was in community college, he received several small scholarships of this amount, and it helped him immensely with miscellaneous expenses.

Having enough money for their basic needs can keep them feeling empowered and confident, which is so important when you are a student!

So, consider donating and help a young person make the world a better and kinder place!

Please email us with any questions at drivenbyheartinfo@gmail.com and thank you for your support!

My Heart Is Made, A Poem

I might change my mind, but my heart is made, of things I feel, and memories of time, not knowing from where they came, but trusting it is kind.

I let go of my fear, to open the way, for my thoughts to keep, the loving ones near, forever seeking the truth, and holding my self dear.

If I honor my soul, and it’s true desire, I can easily tell, because it always knows, how to be free from me, and really let go.
